Step 1 - Download and Run the Installer
Click
here
to download the installer. If you are using Internet
Explorer, a window will appear asking if you wish to Run
or Save the file. Click on the Run button, which will
start the download process.
Once the download has completed, a security warning window
will open asking if you are sure you want to run the
software. Click on the Run button to start installing the
software.
Vista users may get a User Account Control message at
this point, saying that an unidentified program wants to
access your computer. Click on the Allow button to
continue.
Step 2 - Install the OpenVPN Client
The first window you will see after you have succcessfully
downloaded and begun running the installer is the setup
welcome window, below. Click on Next to start installing
the client software.
Follow the instructions given by the installer. Accept the
defaults given at each step.
Step 3 - Start OpenVPN
Once you have successfully installed the OpenVPN client,
you will need to start it before connecting to Kryptnet.
Click on Start (or the windows icon if you're running Vista),
OpenVPN, then OpenVPN GUI.
Note to Vista users: you will need to run the OpenVPN
GUI as an Administrator. To configure OpenVPN to run
as an Administrator:
-
Click on the "Start" menu (the Windows icon at
the bottom-left of your screen), then "All
Programs" and "OpenVPN." Right-click on
"OpenVPN GUI" and click on "Properties."
-
Click on the "Compatibility" tab of the
Properties window and check the "Run this
program as an administrator" option. Click
on "OK."
-
If OpenVPN is already running (look for the
OpenVPN icon in the system tray at the bottom-
right of your screen), exit it and re-start
before connecting to Kryptnet. Exit by
right-clicking on the icon to bring up the menu
and clicking on "Exit."
Step 4 - Connect to Kryptnet
The OpenVPN client runs as a system tray applet. Once it
has started, you will see its icon down at the bottom-right
of your screen. The icon looks like two computers, one
behind and to the side of another. Before connecting, the
screens on the two computers will both be red.
To connect to Kryptnet, right-click on the
applet icon and click on the name of the region you wish
to connect through, then click on Connect. You can either:
-
Click on kryptnet-eu to connect through one of our
servers located in Europe, which will make all your
browsing look like it is coming from a machine based
in Europe; or
-
Click on kryptnet-us to connect through one of our
servers located in the U.S.A. This will make it
look as if you are browsing from a machine located
in the U.S.A.
The OpenVPN client will then open a login window - enter
the username and password you received when you started
your subscription.
You will see a status window scroll through technical
information as it communicates with our servers and
establishes your secure VPN connection.
Once you have connected, the applet icon will turn green
and will display a message indicating your connection was
successful.
Please note that, to improve the speed and reliability of
your connection, we have set the default connections to use
the UDP protocol. This means that your ISP will be able to
tell that you are using a VPN connection, but not what you
are sending or receiving over it. We have included
alternative configuration files that will disguise your
VPN connection as normal encrypted web surfing. These are
named kryptnet-us.tcp and kryptnet-eu.tcp - you can use
these the same way as normal, but be aware that your
connection speed may be slower.
Step 5 - Surf
If you have followed the instructions above, you should now
be connected to Kryptnet and can start using the internet
anonymously, securely and privately.
To confirm that Kryptnet is doing its job, we recommend
you visit a site such as
whatismyip.com,
where you should see Kryptnet's IP address instead of your
own.
